Kids
Derek E. Miller

Analysis by Juan Pablo

Kids is a poem that represents the whole "living in the moment" part of a teenagers life. A group of teenagers are going to the beach, which could be symbolic for basically any where where a teenager would have fun. The narrator is one of the teenagers or young adults at the rendezvous where everyone is hanging out. The ambiance and feel of the hang out is expressed in lines 13 to 16 where the narrator describes the nice breeze, the refreshments and the feeling of relief. The reader gets a whole relaxed feel when reading this poem, however when one gets to line 17, the mood starts to slowly shift into panic for a brief moment. The narrator is expressing their great concern over their assumed loss of their pair of sunglasses, but the mood immediately shift back to a more relaxed tone when the narrator reveals that they misplaced them. This line, I feel, is a great demonstration of how in a teenager's life, one simple thing (in this case the loss of a pair of sunglasses) can ruin an entire day. Alliteration is also seen in this poem on line 1; was and Wednesday. Rhyme is also used through out the poem, most notably in  lines 5 and 6; ocean and lotion.
